Prison scrip issued by the Guizhou Province Second Prison represents one of the more obscure corners of Chinese monetary history. During the early 1960s, Chinese correctional facilities operated internal canteen economies with their own printed tokens and notes, insulating the broader money supply from inmate circulation and providing a mechanism for controlled labor compensation under the reform-through-labor system — laogai. These notes could be exchanged for approved goods within the facility and had no value beyond its walls.
The 1.5 yuan denomination is itself telling. Fractional values at this level suggest a finely tiered internal wage structure rather than a simple canteen token system.
