The Mediterranean monk seal (*Monachus monachus*) is among the rarest pinnipeds on earth, with the total wild population estimated below 800 individuals at the time of this issue. Spain's inclusion of the species reflects the small breeding colonies documented along the Canary Islands coastline, where recolonization efforts have produced cautious optimism from marine biologists after decades of near-total absence from Spanish waters.
