Spain's 1.5 euro denomination exists outside the standard eurozone structure — these are legal tender collector issues authorized nationally but not valid across the EU's common currency area. The Lockheed P-3 Orion featured here belongs to Spain's long-running series honoring the aircraft of the Ejército del Aire. The Spanish Air Force has operated the P-3 in maritime patrol and anti-submarine roles since the 1980s, flying them out of Morón and later Jerez, including active deployments over the Strait of Gibraltar monitoring maritime traffic.
