The 1.5 écu denomination was pegged to the European Currency Unit, the basket currency that preceded the euro — one écu equaled one ECU by design, making fractional issues like this a deliberate nod to the parallel between the medieval French écu and the modern accounting unit. Dozens of French towns issued local écu coinage through the 1990s as both a civic fundraising mechanism and a mild form of regional boosterism during the lead-up to Maastricht ratification.
Beaumont-du-Périgord received its charter as a bastide town in 1272 under Edward I of England, then Duke of Aquitaine.
