Additional information

The Isle of Man's annual Cat series, launched in 1988 by the Pobjoy Mint, became one of the more commercially successful bullion-adjacent programs of the late twentieth century precisely because it rotated breeds yearly — making each date a discrete collectible rather than a generic bullion round. The Somali, a longhaired variant of the Abyssinian, was a relatively recent breed at the time of this issue, having gained formal recognition from major cat fancier associations only in the 1970s and 1980s.

The .9999 fineness distinguishes these fractional gold pieces from the earlier Cat issues, which were struck to .9167.
