Additional information

Gibraltar's late-1990s bullion and semi-numismatic gold program was explicitly designed to compete with established fractional gold issues from the Royal Mint and the South African Mint. The 1/5 Crown denomination is an unusual fraction — chosen partly to hit a specific gold content near one-fifth troy ounce while keeping a retail price point accessible to smaller investors.

The .9999 fineness is notable for the period; most sovereign-adjacent issues of the 1990s still used .9167 or .9990 standards.
