Additional information

Gibraltar's late-1990s bullion fractional program was a direct commercial response to the popularity of fractional gold issues from Australia and the Isle of Man. The 1/5 Crown denomination was never legal tender in any meaningful circulation sense — it existed purely as a vehicle for investment-grade gold in a collector-friendly format, leveraging Gibraltar's Crown coinage authority.

The platypus motif was licensed from the Perth Mint's own imagery during a period when Gibraltar actively poached themes from established bullion programs to attract the same buyer base.
