Gibraltar's 1991 Olympic series was issued ahead of the Barcelona Games of 1992, with the territory using the opportunity — as it frequently did throughout the early 1990s — to produce precious-metal proofs targeting the international collector market rather than domestic circulation. The platinum variant of this denomination sits at the extreme low end of mintage figures for the series; Gibraltar's proof platinum issues from this period were typically struck in quantities under 500, and in some cases considerably fewer.
KM#64a distinguishes the platinum striking from the gold (64) issue produced concurrently.
