The Global Challenge referred to here is the BT Global Challenge yacht race, a round-the-world sailing competition run in the opposite direction to prevailing winds — westward — deliberately chosen to maximize difficulty. The 2000 edition marked the race's fourth running since Chay Blyth established the concept in 1992. Isle of Man issued a clutch of commemorative gold fractions tied to the race, this being one of several denominations in the series.
