Gibraltar has issued commemorative gold in prodigious quantities since the 1990s, contracting with outside designers to produce celebrity and anniversary pieces with little connection to the territory itself. Hepburn died in January 1993, and this piece appeared just three years later — well within the window when estates and licensors were actively commercializing her image across every medium available.
