The 1/48 Thaler denomination was a direct product of the Leipzig Coin Convention of 1690, which attempted to rationalize the chaotic fragmentation of small silver coinage circulating across the Saxon lands. Frederick August I — not yet Augustus the Strong, that title came with the Polish crown in 1697 — was still operating as Elector under the constraints of that agreement during this two-year issue. The 1695–1696 window is narrow, and the type was superseded relatively quickly as his political ambitions shifted monetary priorities toward prestige coinage.
