Obverse description Central field occupied by the crowned quartered coat of arms of Philip II of Spain, incorporating the arms of Castile, León, Aragon, and the Habsburg territories, surmounted by an imperial crown. The shield is encircled by the ornate linked chain of the Order of the Golden Fleece, with the pendant fleece visible at the base. The heraldic composition is rendered in the mannerist style typical of Spanish Netherlands hammered coinage. A circular Latin legend runs along the coin's periphery, interrupted by stops, identifying the issuing sovereign and his titles. The flan is irregular, as characteristic of hand-struck billon coinage of the period.
