| Obverse description | Central field bears the crowned composite coat of arms of Austria-Burgundy, displaying the heraldic escutcheon of the Habsburg-Burgundian dynasty with characteristic quartered divisions. The shield is encircled by the collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece, rendered in fine hammered relief with the pendant fleece visible at the base. A Latin legend runs along the outer periphery, interrupted by pellet stops, identifying Philip II as King of Spain and Duke of Gelderland. The overall design is characteristic of Spanish Netherlands billon coinage of the mid-sixteenth century, struck on an irregularly shaped flan. |
