Sylvius II Frederick died in 1686 after a reign of less than two years over Württemberg-Oels, one of the fragmented Silesian duchies that had passed under Habsburg suzerainty following the Thirty Years' War. Memorial coinage — Sterbemünzen — was a firmly established tradition among the Silesian Piast-descended lines, issued as much to assert dynastic legitimacy as to mark grief. With no surviving male heir, his death effectively ended that branch, and the duchy reverted to Habsburg administration shortly after.
