Reverse description A Cross of Lorraine with an elongated lower stem occupies the central field, set within an epicycloid (polylobed) border that intersects and frames the surrounding legend. The cross is flanked by the ornate initials R and E, referring to René II, Duke of Lorraine. The legend, commencing with a small eagle stop, is disposed in the outer annular field and expresses the devotional invocation to the cross. The overall design reflects the deeply pious and heraldic artistic conventions of late 15th-century Lotharingian minting.
