Obverse lettering CHRISTIANVS D G SAXONIAE ELECTOR
Reverse description The reverse field is entirely occupied by a nine-line funerary inscription in Latin majuscule lettering, filling the coin from rim to rim in the manner of a memorial tablet. The text reads SINCERAE IN DEVM ET PATRIAM FIDEI EXEMPLO POSTERIS RELICTO OBIIT XXV SEPTEMBRIS ANNO M·D·XCI·, recording that Elector Christian I died on 25 September 1591 having left to posterity an example of sincere devotion to God and fatherland. The mint mark H·B· (for mintmaster Hans Biener of the Dresden Mint) appears in the lower field beneath the final line. The plain edge and dense inscription reflect the commemorative, funerary character of this issue.
