Obverse description A large winged basilisk, the heraldic creature of Basel, is depicted in high relief occupying the central field, its scaled serpentine body coiling downward. At the lower left, the oval arms of Basel are displayed within an ornate Baroque cartouche, showing the distinctive black crosier on a white field. The circumferential Latin legend reads DOMINE · CONSERVA · NOS · IN · PACE *, punctuated by raised dots and a terminal star, running along the milled border.
