Obverse description Laureate and draped bust of Emperor Charles V facing left, depicted in the immobilized portrait type traditional to the Besançon coinage. The date 1623 is divided by the bust, with the numeral '16' to the left and '23' to the right. The effigy is rendered in a late medieval hammered style, enclosed within an inner circle formed by a beaded border. The surrounding Latin legend reads: + CAROLVS . V . IMPERATOR, identifying the ruler as Holy Roman Emperor Charles V.
