Charles III ruled Lorraine for over half a century, and the shift from his younger portrait to this older bust type reflects decades of minting continuity rather than a single retooling decision. The flat collar variant distinguishes a specific production phase within a long reign — Flon catalogues at least six die marriages under references 148–153, suggesting meaningful die rotation across the issue's lifespan.
Lorraine's independent coinage persisted despite sustained Valois and later Bourbon pressure to absorb the duchy monetarily. The Nancy mint maintained its own standards throughout.
