Obverse description Central field displays the crowned arms of Nijmegen — a heraldic shield surmounted by an imperial crown — struck in low relief on an irregularly shaped billon flan typical of mid-sixteenth-century hammered coinage. The shield bears the characteristic Nijmegen device. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, divided by a cross pommee or similar ornamental stop at the beginning. The coin's surfaces show the characteristic rough, striated texture of a hammered strike, with the legend partially weak at the flan edges.
