Guelders had been a persistent thorn in Habsburg administration throughout the sixteenth century, and by 1577 the province was operating under the terms of the Pacification of Ghent — the short-lived agreement that briefly united the Netherlands against Spanish military occupation. Coinage struck under Philip II's nominal authority during this period occupied an awkward political space: Spanish sovereignty still appeared on the dies while local estates increasingly controlled actual governance. The Antwerp mint mark places this piece within one of the busiest minting operations in northern Europe, though copper fractions of this denomination saw punishing circulation among the laboring poor and rarely survived intact.
