| Obverse description | Armored bust of Philip II of Spain facing right, depicted in ruffled collar and plate armor, occupying the central field. The portrait is rendered in low relief typical of hammered copper coinage of the period. A circular Latin legend surrounds the bust, reading PHS · D : G · HISP Z REX · DUX · GEL, proclaiming Philip's titles as King of Spain and Duke of Gelderland. The flan is irregular in shape, as characteristic of hand-struck issues of the late sixteenth century. |
