The VOC's copper fractions were minted specifically for use in Asian trade settlements where small-denomination exchange was essential but silver was hoarded or melted. This quarter stuiver dates to a period when the Company's Batavia administration was actively trying to suppress the use of Chinese cash coins, which continued to dominate petty commerce despite VOC efforts to displace them with company-issued copper.
