Frederik III's reign saw Norway administered as a hereditary monarchy only from 1661, meaning this piece was struck while the kingdom still operated under the elected monarchy framework — just years before the coup-like transition that made the crown hereditary and absolute. The speciedaler series to which this belongs was Norway's principal large silver denomination, its fractional pieces doing the actual work of daily commerce in a silver-poor economy heavily dependent on Danish mint policy.
The KM#45.1 designation separates this from closely related die variants. Rønning's specialized work on Norwegian daler coinage remains the authoritative reference for distinguishing them.
