Ascension Island, a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic with a population that has never exceeded a few thousand, issues coins primarily for the collector market rather than circulation. This quarter sovereign is part of a broader commemorative program marking the 60th anniversary of Diana's birth, issued through the Pobjoy Mint under license.
The quarter sovereign denomination itself was revived in Britain only in 2009, after a hiatus stretching back to 1853.
