Additional information

Gibraltar's coin program has long operated as a commercial licensing exercise rather than a reflection of domestic monetary need, and this issue is no exception. The Concorde made its maiden flight on 2 March 1969 — a joint British-French venture that flew commercially until 2003, when all seven surviving Air France and British Airways airframes were retired following the catastrophic 2000 crash at Gonesse that killed 113 people.

The 50th anniversary fell to Gibraltar rather than the UK or France, which says everything about how commemorative gold coinage works in the modern Crown Dependency market.
