Edward VIII abdicated in December 1936 before any circulating coinage bearing his effigy entered production in Britain, making him the only 20th-century British monarch to reign without an issued domestic coin. Gibraltar has exploited that gap for decades, producing collector pieces that carry his portrait in the dynastic sequence he was officially denied.
