Obverse description Within a beaded inner circle, a large Gothic letter K surmounted by an open royal crown, rendered in bold relief against a plain field. The crowned monogram represents Karolus (Charles V), the initial rendered in the Gothic style characteristic of early sixteenth-century Netherlandish coinage. A circular Latin legend surrounds the inner circle, reading IOANA ET KAROL D G, separated by cross stops. The flan is irregular and slightly ragged at the edges, consistent with hammered production.
