Obverse description Diademed and draped bust of Emperor Leo I facing right, rendered in the late Roman imperial style typical of barbarian imitative coinage. The emperor wears a pearl diadem and a paludamentum fastened at the shoulder. The portrait, while echoing official Roman prototypes, displays the slightly cruder execution characteristic of Germanic tribal imitations. The surrounding legend reads D N LEO RC - PRET AVG, a corrupt rendering of the standard Leonine obverse inscription.
