Obverse description Pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed imperial bust of Anastasius I facing left, rendered in a somewhat barbaric style characteristic of Gepid coinage. The effigy is depicted in three-quarter view and is surrounded by a retrograde Latin legend reading from right to left around the periphery of the flan. The portrait retains the conventional Byzantine iconographic formula while exhibiting the cruder workmanship typical of post-Roman Germanic imitative issues.
