The Piedmontese Republic existed for barely a year — a French-imposed provisional government established after Napoleon's forces effectively stripped the House of Savoy of its mainland territories in 1798. This coin is among the first issues produced under that republic, struck at Turin before the territory was formally annexed into France as the département du Pô in 1802.
The series is rare in any grade, a direct consequence of the republic's short life and the disruption to normal mint operations during the transitional period.
