Additional information

The 1950 date marks the first coinage issued under the Republic of India following the transition from British dominion status in January of that year. The quarter rupee series was discontinued after 1956 as India moved toward decimalization, which came into effect on April 1, 1957 — replacing the anna-based system that had structured Indian currency since the Mughal period. This type had only a six-year window of legal existence.
