Obverse description Central device features the Mexican republican eagle displayed facing left, perched on a cactus rising from a lake, with a serpent clutched in its beak, rendered in low relief characteristic of provincial copper coinage. The eagle is flanked by a laurel and oak wreath curving upward from the base of the design. The circumferential legend REPUBLICA MEXICANA runs around the periphery in raised Latin lettering. The field shows typical die wear and surface irregularities consistent with the crude minting standards of mid-19th century Mexican state issues. The overall artistic execution reflects the rustic style common to Durango's emergency and fractional copper coinage of this period.
