Obverse description Central device depicts three volcanoes rising above a horizontal baseline, with a radiant sun emerging from behind the central peak. The mint mark 'G.' (Guatemala City Mint) appears in the lower field beneath the baseline. The composition is rendered in a bold, relief style characteristic of Central American republican coinage of the period. No peripheral legend surrounds the design, leaving the field unadorned.

Reverse description The denomination '1/4' is inscribed above the word 'REAL' at center, the entire legend enclosed within an ornate wreath of laurel branches sweeping outward symmetrically from the base. The date '1889' appears in the lower exergual area beneath the wreath. The bold, incuse lettering and decorative wreath treatment are consistent with the standard type for Guatemalan fractional silver coinage of the late nineteenth century.
