Obverse description Left-facing uncrowned effigy of King George VI, executed in high relief after a model by Thomas Humphrey Paget. The King is depicted with a bare head, wearing a draped military uniform. The surrounding legend reads GEORGIVS VI REX IMPERATOR, with the engraver's initials HP appearing at the truncation of the bust. The portrait is rendered in a restrained, classical style consistent with British Commonwealth coinage of the period.

Reverse description Two Cape Sparrows (Passer melanurus) perched on a branch of an acacia tree, enclosed within a beaded inner circle, after a design by George Kruger Gray. The bilingual legend SOUTH AFRICA and SUID AFRIKA flanks the design, rendered in both English and Afrikaans in accordance with South Africa's official language policy. The engraver's initials KG appear discreetly on the reverse field.
