Struck under the reign of Sverre Sigurdsson, who seized the Norwegian throne after decades of brutal civil conflict between the Birkebeiner and Bagler factions. Sverre's monetary issues are among the most poorly documented of any Scandinavian medieval series — attribution relies heavily on hoard context rather than contemporary written records. Skaare's classification remains the standard reference, though individual specimens frequently defy clean assignment within it.
The cutting of full pennies into halves and quarters was routine practice in twelfth-century Norway, where small-denomination coinage was chronically undersupplied.
