The Säter mint operated only briefly in the early 1640s, one of several provincial copper mints Sweden established to manage the enormous output demands created by its plate money economy. Sweden's reliance on low-value copper coinage during this period was structurally tied to the Falun copper mine, which by the 1630s supplied roughly two-thirds of Europe's copper and needed a monetary outlet to sustain demand for the metal.
Kristina was a minor throughout this issue's production, with Chancellor Axel Oxenstierna directing policy during the regency.
