The Libertad bullion series launched in 1981 as Mexico's answer to the Krugerrand and Maple Leaf, arriving late to a market already dominated by South African and Canadian product. The quarter-ounce denomination was added in 1991, rounding out the fractional lineup that had been incomplete since the series began. Banco de México prices these against spot daily, so surviving examples in any condition typically carry premiums tied to gold value rather than numismatic interest.
The 1991–1994 window predates the peso crisis of December 1994, after which the series saw significant production and distribution changes.
