Obverse description At centre, the crowned royal shield of Scotland bearing the lion rampant within a tressure flory-counter-flory, surmounted by a royal crown rendered in relief. The fractional mark of value '3/4' (denoting one-quarter merk) is placed in the field to either side of the shield. A continuous Latin legend surrounds the design, separated from the central device by the coin's irregular flan edge, reading clockwise from upper right.

Reverse description An ornate floriate cross occupies the full reverse field, with a six-pointed star at its centre point. In the four angles formed by the arms of the cross, crowns and thistles alternate in a regular pattern, referencing the royal and national emblems of Scotland. A continuous Latin legend, drawn from the Vulgate, encircles the design and is interrupted by the date of issue.
