Obverse description Central field bears the crowned arms of Nassau: a shield divided by horizontal lines (barry) charged with a rampant lion facing left, surmounted by a ducal crown with cross finial. The shield is rendered in relief with fine horizontal line engraving representing the tinctures. A circular legend surrounds the arms, reading HERZ. NASSAUISCHE SCHEID MÜNZ, with a toothed or beaded border encircling the entire design. The engraving is characteristic of the early nineteenth-century German small coinage style, precise and economical in its execution.
