The Wadiyar dynasty of Mysore minted these small copper fractions during a period when the kingdom was asserting itself against Mughal pressure from the north and managing complex tributary relationships with the Maratha Confederacy. The kasu was a deeply local unit, rooted in south Indian monetary tradition rather than the Mughal rupee system that dominated much of the subcontinent.
By the mid-eighteenth century, Hyder Ali's rise through the Mysore military would end the Wadiyar's effective sovereignty, and coinage policy shifted with him.
