Tonga's 1968 palladium issues were among the first legal-tender palladium coins struck anywhere in the world, predating the metal's widespread adoption in numismatics by nearly two decades. The series was produced by the Pobjoy Mint and emerged partly from Tonga's willingness, under Taufa'ahau Tupou IV, to experiment aggressively with coinage as both a revenue instrument and an international curiosity.
Palladium was trading at a fraction of gold's price in 1968, making the metal choice economically practical while still projecting an image of novelty and prestige.
