Tonga's 1967 coronation issues for Taufa'ahau Tupou IV were among the first palladium coins struck for circulation anywhere in the world — a deliberate choice by the king, who held a strong personal interest in economics and sought to monetize the metal's novelty as much as its value. The series effectively introduced palladium to the numismatic market decades before the metal gained mainstream investment attention.
KM#21 is the smallest denomination in that inaugural palladium set. Tupou IV had assumed the throne following the death of his mother, Queen Sālote, in 1965.
