Additional information

Guglielmo VIII ruled Montferrat for nearly three decades as a reliable Milanese client, his coinage policy shaped almost entirely by Sforza pressure. The quarter grosso series from this reign reflects the broader billon debasement sweeping the north Italian petty states in the 1460s and 1470s, as silver fled toward Venice and larger minting authorities. Montferrat had no mines of its own.

MIR 170 is among the more frequently cited types from this marquessate, though surviving examples in attributable condition remain scarce outside specialist Italian collections.
