Obverse description Within a plain inner circle, a pontifical mitre rendered in high relief occupies the central field, surmounted by a trefoil finial. Below the mitre appear the conjoined letters PVP (Pontifex Urbanus Papa), serving as the papal monogram of Urban V. The surrounding legend in Gothic Latin characters reads VRBANVS QVINTUS, identifying the issuing pope, separated by pellet stops. The flan is irregular in form, characteristic of hammered medieval coinage.
