Obverse description Central field dominated by a downward-pointing sword, the blade extending vertically and dividing the design into two halves, with a shield of Lorraine (bendy of six pieces) flanking each side of the blade. The composition is enclosed within an inner beaded circle, beyond which the ducal legend runs in Gothic lettering around the full circumference. The dies are crudely engraved in the medieval hammered tradition, with the heraldic shields rendered in low relief characteristic of early 14th-century Lotharingian coinage.
