Obverse lettering + CAROLVS • DVX • SA • II FERT
(Translation: Charles, duke of Savoy. Through unity and religion we are bind.)
Reverse description A floriated cross of the Mauritian Order occupies the central field, with trefoil or fleur-de-lis terminals on each arm. Two pellets are placed in the second and fourth quarters formed by the cross. The surrounding circular legend, contained within a linear border, records the title of Marquis in Italy and the mintmaster's or engraver's mark. The design is characteristic of hammered Savoyard small denomination coinage of the early sixteenth century.
