Mechteld van Kleef ruled Guelders as regent following the capture of her husband Duke Reinald III at the Battle of Vlatten in 1371 — he remained imprisoned by his own brother Edward until his death, never recovering power. The plak denomination was a Low Countries small silver type that circulated aggressively in regional trade, and Mechteld's issues are among the few medieval Guelders coins struck under female regency authority, making the issuer attribution itself the primary historical interest here.
