Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte's path from a lawyer's son in Pau to King Karl XIV Johan of Sweden remains one of the more improbable careers produced by the Napoleonic wars. A French marshal with a republican tattoo reportedly still on his chest when he died in Stockholm, he was elected Crown Prince of Sweden in 1810 largely because a Swedish court official had been treated kindly by his troops. He subsequently fought against Napoleon at Leipzig in 1813.
This piece belongs to Monnaie de Paris' ongoing Franco-Swedish commemorative program, which marked the bicentennial of his election to the Swedish succession.
