Obverse description Draped bust of the young Louis XIV facing right, with long flowing hair (the so-called 'longue mèche' or long wick type), engraved in high relief by Jean Warin. The king is depicted bare-necked with a lace collar, his youthful effigy rendered in the classicizing portrait style characteristic of mid-17th-century French royal coinage. The circular Latin legend runs along the periphery, interrupted at the top by a small star or mint mark. The entire design is enclosed within an inner beaded border and an outer toothed (grènetis) border.
