Additional information

The 1642–43 quarter écu falls within the final years of Louis XIII's reign, a period dominated politically by Richelieu — who died in December 1642, seven months before the king himself. French royal finances were under severe strain from the Thirty Years' War, and silver coinage production was pressed hard across multiple mints. Dy royales 1334a distinguishes this subtype by mint mark, placing output within a narrow window before the dies were retired upon the king's death in May 1643.
